WRHC STUDENT HOUSING POLICY #1-97-01

The Winding Roads Health Consortium will assure that student housing will be available which is adequate and meets fire and life safety codes and public health standards.

Health professions students from West Virginia University, Marshall University, and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine will be provided with first preference for the free housing provided through the West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnerships. Health professions students form other schools will be housed on an as scheduled and as available basis. These students are not guaranteed free housing.

Housing is provided on a non-discriminatory basis. Where possible same gender housing will be provided, although students of both genders may be placed in the same housing. If provided housing is not suitable for a particular student, the consortium will assist the student in finding other arrangements, at the students expense.

The Learning Resource Center

The Learning Resource Center is a free standing facility with 24-hour access. It contains the IDE conference room, computer room, site coordinator and administrative assistant offices. There are three PCs and a laptop computer. Programming available is MU RuralNet, WV Consult, Grateful Med, Medline/CINHAL/PsychLit, E-Mail, Internet Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and some games for relaxation. Book references are available for all represented disciplines but must remain in the LRC.
The community is very supportive of the WVRHEP. The Center has an excellent working relationship with the general medical community. Local businesses and organizations have been supportive in their time, with donations and volunteerism whether directly for WVRHEP, PATCH or Family Health Care.

To support the students rural based educational curriculum, the Learning Resource Centers provide the traditional in-house library references (texts & manuals) and access to the Internet System. This electronic process enables them to access not only campus based materials but numerous other systems, each having e-mail, news, and research capabilities.

The LRC is being utilized by various community groups and its health related resources is being made available to the larger medical community and others as finances and time allow. Roane General Hospital is a partner in the MDTV system.
