Coplin Clinic held a Diabetic Screening Day for he local community on June 9th. Nutrition Fair - Ravenswood Senior Center
Jackson County Community Health Center provided the "Recipe for Health" fair at the senior center in Ravenswood. Education displays were provided on obestity, fad diets, food pyramid and DASH (Dietary Apporaches to Stop Hypertension" eating plan. CAMC Dietitian demonstrated using heart-healthy recipes. RHEP students assisted with blood pressures, Body Mass Index, and basic information on nutrition.

He instructed them on proper brushing techniques, denture care, purpose of mouthwash to better assist the residents while staying with them. RGH Staff, Brannon Dental, Barsh Opticians, Dr. Radow along with WRHC students provided the following services: free sports physicals (276) , blood pressure screening, finger sticks to check blood glucose level, height/weight, vision screenings, sports medicine handouts and registration. Srisekar, WRHC Medical student talked with the Jackson Co. COA about stroke, heart and heat. He addressed the warning signs and symptoms for each and what to do should you experience the symptoms. Sri talked about the importance to limit exposure to the sun between the hours of 10 and 2. He provided each person with a handout on blood pressure and what the required limits are. After the presentation, Sri opened the floor for any questions or concerns they might have.

Women''s HealthFair - Staats Pharmacy
WVU PharmD Students, Brooke and Yadranca organized a local healthfair on women’s health. Both students were interviewed on the local radio station to promote the healthfair and what type of screenings would be available. The students distributed flyers to all local health profession offices and business owners. Brooke and Yadranca talked with several drug representatives about the information they wanted to provide to the community. During the Health Fair on 10-13-04 the following screenings were available along with educational brochures: Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose, Osteoporosis, Cholesterol, height and weight. A display was prepared with various female health issues such as breast and cervical cancer. Dr. Desousa spoke with the patients about skin conditions. Pfizer donated educational pamphlets and snacks for all the participates.

Great American Smoke Out - Ripley
The Great American Smokeout has helped to spotlight the dangers of tobacco use and the challenges of quitting, but more importantly, it has set the stage for the cultural revolution in tobacco that has occurred over this period. An estimated 47 million adults in the United States still smoke. Approximately half of them will die prematurely from smoking. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for men and women. More than 80 percent of lung cancers are believed to result from smoking. Frances and Shawn provided the community with a display board and handouts to encouraged participants to sign the "Smoke Free Home Pledges". Each person that signed the pledge was given a free turkey sub.
