The Appalachian Adventure:
An Interdisciplinary Cultural Experience

Return to Programs

The Appalachian Adventure is an opportunity to learn more about our state, it's culture, it's history and it's people (us). This is an important aspect as a health care professional in rural Appalachia (or for any population you serve) to better understand your role and relationship to the community and their needs.

An interdisciplinary team session that allows us to leave the boundaries of the LRC, classroom, or clinic setting and take a different approach to the learning process. The IDS affords us an opportunity to interact on a more personal level, get a perspective of other disciplines knowledge areas, understand limitations of care within our disciplines, and begin to build the team concept of a comprehensive and holistic health care system.

Each individual involved in the IDS has a research assignment that will add to our understanding of Appalachia. This will be added to the tours, presentations or other activities we encounter in our adventure throughout the day. At days end we will have gained much in our understanding of each other, be very tired, and know we have lived a full and exciting day in our lives.
