Greenbrier
county is surrounded by state parks that offer recreational activities
year round. Wildlife is plentiful in the area; while-tailed
deer, wild turkey, pheasant, and grouse are especially numerous.
There is bass, bluegill, muskie, and trout fishing on the
many rivers and streams in the area, along with ample camping,
boating, water skiing, and backpacking. Down hill skiing areas,
fishing, state parks, and national forests are within a
1-2 hour drive and some of the best white water rafting in the
country is within a 1/2 hour drive.
There are two high schools in the county, two junior high
schools, and ten elementary schools. There are numerous
Protestant churches as well as one Catholic parish in western
Greenbrier County. Greenbrier County and Rainelle are very
typical of most West Virginia communities whose people hold
strong family values and support cultural diversity. There are
a number of civic and social organizations in the community
such as Lion's Club, Rotary, Garden, Kiwanis, and Women's
Club. There is an extremely low crime rate. There is a public
golf course, tennis courts, and several community parks
in Rainelle alone.
Major health concerns in these two counties are heart disease,
lung cancer, C.O.P.D.,
hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle.
The
percentage of elderly in the county is higher, at 17%, than the
national average of 13%. In comparison to the U.S., Greenbrier
County has higher rates of heart disease, lung cancer, unintentional
injuries, motor vehicle accidents, C.O.P.D, hypertension, seatbelt
nonuse, and sedentary lifestyle.
Thirty-seven percent of adults in Greenbrier County have less
than a high school education, compared to 34 percent for
the state. Eighteen percent of residents live at or below poverty
level, compared to 19.7 percent for the entire state. The
unemployment rate of 11 percent compares to a 8 percent

Forty-three percent of Fayette County adults have less than a
high school diploma. Twenty-four percent of the population
lives at or below poverty level. The county's unemployment rate
is 10.4 percent.
