New
River Health Association
is one of five health clinics in the consortium. New River Health
Association has three health care facilities. At the New River Family
Health Center, ten providers offer pediatric, adult, and geriatric
care. With the support and consultation of one OB/GYNS, three certified
nurse-midwives provide well-woman care, cancer control and family
planning, as well as deliver babies at the New
River Birth Center. Staff at the New River Breathing Center
test coal miners' breathing and hearing capacity loss, providing
patients with benefits counseling as well as medical care. Smoking
cessation support group meetings are also held through the New River
Breathing Center. The North Fayette
Family Health Center is located in a more rural, less developed
area and has two family practice providers who offer pediatric,
adult, geriatric care. Combined, including outreach programs and
off-site visits, a total of 12,000 patients are seen each year,
with 50,000 encounters per year.
New
River Health Association strongly emphasizes community health
promotion, sponsoring school-based well child care and health
education, a home-visiting perinatal education and support program
for at risk women, and childbirth classes. Physicians provide
care for two local nursing homes and inpatient care at Plateau
Medical Center (adult care) and Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley
(pediatrics).
Cassis
Dental Practice is dedicated to providing their patients with
the highest quality services. Their dental team is committed to
the patient's total dental health. Their office utilizes the best
materials, latest techniques and methods; with the patient's comfort
and safety being top priority. They strive to maintain a positive
environment from the moment you enter the office. Cassis Dental

Fayette
Clinic is a Heritage Medical Associates' clinic located
in Lochgelly. This family practice clinic has been serving Fayette
County for over 40 years, offering comprehensive, high quality
family care to the residents of our area. Fayette Clinic has three
full-time physicians and approximately 10,000 active patients.
Practitioners at the clinic act as the Fayette County Health Department
Medical Director and Medical Examiner, the Fayette County Board
of Education Physician, as well as Medical Director for several
nursing homes and continuous care programs in the county. The
Fayette Clinic is the only clinic in a three-county region certified
to complete Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) physicals.
Gulf
Family Practice is a rural health clinic operated by
Joseph Golden, MD, MPH. It is seven miles south of Beckley in
Sophia, a formerly active coal mining are known as the (Winding)
Gulf (Creek) area. It consists of a family practice physician,
a physician assistant, and two nurse practitioners. All ages,
from newborns to geriatricians in their nineties, are seen in
the practice. Multi-generational families are often in the patient
base, with some four and five generations represented. Home visits
on homebound and paralyzed patients are part of the practice's
routine. Obstetrical care is not provided; pregnant patients are
referred to other health care facilities. Dr. Golden does hospital
rounds at both Raleigh General Hospital and Beckley Appalachian
Regional Hospital. The emphasis of the practice is on comprehensive
health care and healthy attitudes for our patients. Our professional
attitude is that of assisting patients assume responsibility in
their health and treatment of their medical problems.
Klenk
Dental Practice offers a wide range of dental services
for their patients. A preventive oriented approach is foremost
and is reinforced utilizing dental hygiene services and participation
in dental health education programs in the community. Patients
may range in age from toddlers to the elderly. Nursing home patients
are seen in the Ansted Health Care Center.
The practice operates three days per week in Ansted and two days
per week in Mt. Hope. The office staff consists of a dental hygienist,
two dental assistants, and two office managers.
Montgomery
General Hospital is a 99-bed non-profit facility located
in Montgomery on the Kanawha River, southeast of Charleston. Montgomery
General Hospital is dedicated to providing the highest quality
medical, dental, and hospital care to the residents of Fayette,
Kanawha, Clay, and Nicholas Counties.
This
hospital serves a very important industrial and mining area, handles
more than 2000 inpatients yearly, and treats 75,000 additional
patients in its clinics or emergency department. Montgomery General
Hospital offers and Emergency department, Radiology, Pharmcy,
Technical Services (EKG, EEG), Physical Therapy, Cardiac Rehabilitation,
Surgery and Recovery, Medical-Surgical Unit, Intensive Care, Sports
Medicine, Pediatric Care, OB/GYN services, Extended Care Unit,
Elderly Care Center, Social Work Department, Internal Medicine,
Family Practice, Gastroenterology, Pathology, Ophthalmology, Urology,
Endocrinology, Anesthesiology, Home Health, and Speech and Hearing.
The
Petersen Practice is located in Oak Hill, and offers
pediatric, adult, geriatric, outpatient and inpatient care. Many
of Dr. Bruce Petersen's patients are older and have multi-system
illnesses. Some of the procedures he does frequently include stress
tests, colonoscopies, EGDs, flexible sigmoidoscopies. Dr. Millie
Petersen provides well women care, some well child care, and care
for two nursing homes (Hidden Valley and Fayette Continuous Care).
She is the Director of Plateau Medical Center's skilled nursing
unit. In addition, arrangements can be made for interested students
to work with a dietician, respiratory therapist, or orthopedic
surgeon at PMC.
Plateau
Medical Center is a 91-bed not for profit hospital in
Oak Hill. The patients are usually adults, often older patients
(70% of its patients are on Medicare) from Fayette County. The
hospital offers an emergency room, ICU, in patient and outpatient
surgery, full range of diagnostic imagining, nuclear medicine,
MRI, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, laboratory services,
and home health services. PMC serves 2700 patients a year for
a total of 17,000 patient/days. New River Health Association family
practice providers, Dr. Bruce Petersen from the Petersen Practice,
and Dr. Karen Petry and Dr. Donald Newell from Fayette Clinic,
are all on staff at PMC.
