The mini-grants are to be awarded around 1-15-00. She would like to work in three rural sites on immunization, nutrition, education and management. Lunch and learn sessions are available through the extension service and resource manuals are currently being drafted. She will provide us with a map that includes RHEP sites, diabetic educators and support groups. Office of Rural Health Report 3% Budget Cuts- This is an anticipated loss and will not impact next year’s budget or the $500,000 request made to the Governor’s Budget. Plans for reducing your budget need to be in to Margaret by this Friday. This is a contingency plan, not a trend and many believe it is politically driven. The legislative report card went out with the $500,000 request and has not received opposition thus far. Those funded by lottery proceeds (like HSTA) were not affected by this budget cut. All state government has been affected. A moratorium has been placed on all special projects funding which could later be applied to local budgets if necessary with full partnership approval. All consortia should work with their local boards to reduce their budgets. Former Students- Hilda will be tracking former students back to 1992 and possibly be adding a field to Tracker to track the students who have been hired in rural areas. Dr. Shannon is working a longitudinal study on R&R in RHEP. He has been chosen as a finalist in a Robert Woods Johnson three-year fellowship program. Legislative Report Card- Contact Karen Runyon at the University Systems office at #558-2736 for copies of the completed report. AHEC Grant- Dr. Lewis and Monty Nottingham are working to develop three regions for graduate training in rural areas. The RHEP support letter was distributed and outlines that RHEP coordinators and the RHEP advisory panel will be involved in the process. Funding should be decided for this project by May 2000. Some concerns raised included: · Lack of understanding and communication among partners · Competitive language that did not support current trends · Grad. and undergrad. training programs should never have to compete for the same funding · AHEC needs to be a true partnership with the local communities and schools · AHEC boards need to include RHEP and community membership · Competition for training slots already exists and could cause negative situations with field faculty · Currently there is no money budgeted for paying the residents · Questions and concerns about this proposal should be directed to Mike Lewis at WVU-Charleston ASAP. Marshall University- Marshall School of Nursing appears to not be meeting RHEP requirements or receiving RHEP funding. Hilda and Dr. Weston plan to look into Marshall’s use of funding. Legislative Day- All awards nominations are due by this Friday. A nomination for a student research project is needed. A shuttle van from the Holiday Inn to the Capital will run at 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Inform Hilda of all local visits made with your legislators prior to Legislative Day. CMS/ResearchForm- Field faculty would like a form to be used for all activities. A committee of site coordinators is discussing this issue with the field faculty committee. WVU Fair- All disciplines should be there from 2-6 p.m. on Friday with an orientation to be held earlier in the day. Tobacco Budget- Kelly drafted a letter for everyone to send to the Governor requesting that the settlement money be used for tobacco prevention and cessation education. Letters should include on-going projects in your communities and how further funding could enhance them. SC Spring Retreat- The retreat is scheduled for March 29-31 at Canaan Valley. Activities will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday and end at noon on Friday. Governor’s Wellness Program- Anna distributed a letter and brochures about group membership and other activities. Materials should be reviewed by next month’s meeting and we will vote on this as a guest presentation. Concerns/Helpful Hints/Appreciations · More information is needed on CCPH membership.
