RHEP Site Coordinators Meeting MINUTES February 23, 1999 Present: Chuck Conner, Jacquelynn Copenhaver, April Vestal, Steve Thomas, Sandy Baker, Sherri Payette, Anna Reno, Georgianna Tillis, Kelly Blake, Penny Rose Asbury, Elizabeth Richmond, Carla Campbell, Robert Blake, Parr Thacker, Malinda Turner, Jamie Judy, Jennifer Allen, Kathryn Greenlief, and Kathy Jurkovich Absent: The meeting was called to order by Kelly Blake. Check-In The group shared their comments about the Student Advisory Panel meeting that was held on February 22 in Charleston. Palm Pilots were distributed by Mark Allen, WV CONSULT. Approval of Minutes Minutes were approved as stands (Thacker/Payette). Review of Next Steps from January Meeting 1. Consortium brochure information to Leslie ASAP. If you need it on publisher, Jennifer can do this for you. Done. 2. Email Hilda with any suggestions or comments concerning the RHEP video script. Done. 3. Jacquelynn will bring more specifics on out-of-state rotations to the February meeting. Tabled. 4. Robert will get everyone information concerning retirement plans/options as soon as he receives the information. On-going. 5. Site Coordinators to email Sandy by March 11th. with head count of those planning to attend the March 15th. Advisory Board Retreat. On-going. 6. Site Coordinators to mail Hilda 2-3 student orientation packets or bring to the WVU Health Fair on the 21st. Done. 7. Site Coordinators to email Sandy & Georgianna the number and names of participants attending the Legislative Day Health Fair and Banquet that evening by February 5th. Done. 8. Anna to get the Gatekeeper Conference agenda and bring to the February meeting for discussion. On-going. 9. Sandy needs for all Site Coordinators to email or mail her the current goal update and the next 6-month goals. On-going. 10. Site Coordinators to email Alex and/or Mark information that wish to have put into their palm pilots such as personal address books. Removed. 11. Hilda is looking for any community member that would be willing to speak at the CCPH Conference this year. Please email her with anyone you think would be interested from your consortium board. Done. Office of Rural Health Report Liaison Search- The search has been narrowed down to three candidates. Interviews are to be held on the 5th of March in Morgantown. Panel Retreat- Clarification on the POM assignments is needed from Office of Rural Health. March SC Meeting- The group decided unanimously to cancel the March SC meeting in Flatwoods. Old Business SC Spring Retreat- Schedule and survey were distributed. Retreat will be held March 11-13 at Jackson’s Mill, WV. School Letters- We have received two responses from WVU and four have not been mailed. Letters should be brought to SC Retreat for round robin discussion and issue should be resolved after that time. New Brochures and Display Format- (April, Parr, and Elizabeth) The group decided to leave all displays and brochures as they are now- Consortia specific. Legislative Day- Overall success with a good turnout. Next year the displays will be spaced out a little more. SC Award- The group has asked the corresponding secretary to write a letter to the Office of Rural Health requesting that the SC group not receive individual awards at the Legislative Dinner next year as mentioned by Dr. Weston. The group would like to represent a team approach to the partnership without seeming to compete with one another. New Business Healthy People 2010- Resource list was distributed and thanks was given to those who volunteered to help in setting the new objectives for 2010. The annual SHEC Conference will be help April 18-21 at Canaan Valley. Leadership Workgroup- Please read the fax from Jacquelynn concerning the West Virginia Rural Access Program and email her your comments. Other Coordinator Concerns · Kathryn has applied for Leslie Plants’ position as site coordinator for Mountain Health Partners- Braxton. The Board will meet in March and the position should be filled by April. · The group decided to offer the free training from Franklin Covey to the RHEP support staff. · Tracker concerns should be emailed to April by March 9th. Outside Presentations Recruitment Survey by Norm Montalto- Norm answered questions about the goal of the survey and what is will be used for. The results will be used by the Field Faculty Committee and the Advisory Panel. He suggested that we summarize the efforts in our Consortiums instead of answering for each county separately. Poison Control by Rina Foy- Rina passed out modules to be used by RHEP students for Poison Control programs. Stickers and other materials can be obtained by her via email. Poison Control Week is March 21-27, 1999. WV Diabetes Coalition by Shannon Smith, Amy Thomas, and Irene Tessaro- Shannon shared the activities of the Prevention Research Center at WVU concerning Diabetes research. Twelve focus groups around the state have been chosen to participate. She anticipates further grant opportunities in the future. For more information, feel free to contact Shannon. Irene is with WVU’s Community Medicine Department working on tailored health education publications and lay helping programs. She hopes to work with RHEP in the future on canned programs to be used as community service activities for the students. WV Initiative to Improve End-of-Life Care by James Keresztury- James is with WVU’s Center for Health Ethics working to improve the negative cultural perspective of death and dying. He is facilitating eight community forums on end-of-life care and would like to meet with the following local RHEP boards- Western, Little Kanawha, Country Roads, Mountain Health Partners- Braxton, and Southern Counties. He will be calling the respective site coordinators in the near future. There will be a statewide summit in Flatwoods to present the findings from the community forums. Helpful Hints/ Appreciations Chuck and Penny- Volunteered to be mentors to new site coordinator- Amy Thomas. Steve- Mike Holt is the new contact at AB College. Kelly- Updated brochure masters. Anna- New SC phone list. Chuck- Marshall student information. Georgianna- Volunteer Liability information. Steve- Thanks to all, and enjoy working with everyone. Next Steps From This Meeting 1. Robert will continue gathering information on site coordinators retirement plans. 2.
