Levels Policy Discussion/Update – Has the policy had the impact we had hoped?  There was a question about when distribution would be looked at again.  Hilda agreed to check with Jodie on this question and report back to the committee.  Hilda commented that there are a number of things that can impact distribution including availability of preceptors, housing, and willingness to take students.  There was discussion of looking at data after December 15 to review completed versus projected rotations.  Site coordinators will also be discussing this at their meeting (ie, logistical issues, changes).  Elizabeth commented that the policy had opened up areas that had not previously been considered by students.  She said she did not feel as prepared for this as she needed to be initially, but is now ready.  Patti asked what has been gained by putting students into these areas?  A suggestion was made to consider doing something to build additional service learning opportunities.  The committee decided to schedule a schools committee meeting for January to discuss and look at the data.  There may be a possibility to do this during the January rural fair at WVU.  This will be explored.

IDS/IDE Policy Training at FDC – Dan Brody discussed the training for On-Site Clinical Directors, Site Coordinators and AHEC Center Directors at the upcoming Faculty Development Conference.  The pre-conference training will be held Thursday, September 23 from 9AM – 12Noon.  The Faculty Development Committee will be providing training on the new IDS/IDS policy for RHEP as well as the manual developed by the committee for interdisciplinary experiences and interdisciplinary sessions that is on the WVRHEP website.  Approximately 25-30 people are expected for the training.

Other New Business –

Kathleen Bors said that the outreach/curriculum committee discussed the service learning module at their meeting, which will also be discussed at this meeting.  The committee also looked at their responsibilities and next steps.  Hilda said that the COCC and Schools Committee have several members in common and that the two committees may want to consider looking at the current committee structure and possibly placing the agendas together for the future.  If there is overlap between the two committees, joining may address some of this.  The committee agreed to wait until after the strategic planning meeting in November and then discuss committee structure.

Service Learning Module – April discussed how the service learning module came about.  A training was held has February in Charleston to begin work in linking clinical objectives for health profession students to objectives for service learning projects.  At this meeting, several projects were developed the affective and cognitive outcomes.  This work was then taken and these projects will be developed into “Learning Modules” that students can access from the WVRHEP website.  Derrick has put a DRAFT module up on an unpublished website.  We would like to receive your feedback about the module.  This section of the web would continually be updated with service learning projects.  Students would be able to go in to the website, click on their project, select learning objectives they would like to know more about and then print a learning contract for them, their site coordinator/AHEC director and preceptor to sign.  April will email the unpublished link and you can go through the website and make suggestions for changes/improvements.  Dan also said that he would present this information to the OSCD’s and site coordinators at the September 23 training for their input.

Displaced health professions students – Hilda discussed that the schools are in the process of trying to figure out what to do regarding the Louisiana and Mississippi health professions students who are currently displaced due to the recent hurricane.  Derrick has been working on a website in which students can go and see what rotations are available in West Virginia in their discipline.  The schools do not want the students to contact other schools directly.  Some of the committee members indicated that this has already happened.  RHEP/AHEC are working on the website that will have the training sites for rotations, housing and other information.  If you do not want to be listed as a contact on this site, please let Hilda know.

Chair of Schools Committee - Norm Ferrari discussed that the Schools Committee will be needing a new chair.  Dr. Foster has decided to step down as chair of the committee.  The committee decided to table decision regarding a new chair until after the November strategic planning meeting.

With no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned.
