Committee Description “Policy 96-02” - The draft of the Joint Community
Outreach/Curriculum Committee Description were read and approved by the
committee. (Meckstroth/Conner) The description is as follows
This committee oversees the development and maintenance of the WVRHEP
curriculum, including interdisciplinary sessions and community outreach
activities as carried out by field faculty, site coordinators and students
while on rural rotations. This committee works with the evaluation
committee in integrating the community outreach objectives of the WVRHEP
program. This committee defines the range of learning experiences
for students, and establishes policies for the integration of the campus
programs and the rural rotations sites on all components of the WVRHEP
rotation.
There was discussion by committee members that they should be reviewing IDS evaluation data on a regular basis if they are responsible for this. April will check with Alex Lubman and Jodie about this. There was also a discussion about the quality of the IDS sessions at sites and how the committee can assist in helping sites to develop their teaching skills.
Community Outreach Manual Update – April announced that the manual had been updated in August to include the Community Service Parameters Recommendations as an attachment and the 2010 Healthy People Goals and Objectives. The committee discussed that it would be a good idea for students to have access to a web site or information on what types of community service is going on in each consortium. This could be something to share with students and would compliment the outreach manual. April will talk with Mark Allen about this possibility. Patti commented that it would be good to have site coordinators available to talk with students on campus during their rural course curriculum. Dr. Meckstroth said he would like to see dental students involved in more sporting activities at schools such as fitting mouth guards, and talking with students about tobacco, etc.
Patti mentioned the Innovations for Health Applications from HRSA.
She hoped students would be encouraged to participate. All sites
were mailed these applications recently.
Project Updates – There were no project updates reported.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
