Approval of Minutes July 19,1999 (Allen/Meckstroth) III. Old Business a. The draft of the Community Outreach Manual for Health Profession Students has been disseminated to WVRHEP committees for comment and has also been posted in draft form on the web at www.wvrhep.org/comm_out_man.html. Currently, the manual refers to Healthy People 2000 Goals and Objectives, but will be changed to reflect the Healthy People 2010 Goals when they are released in April 2000. Research contacts have been listed for all three schools. Final approval of the manual as an official document for WVRHEP is on the agenda for today's Advisory Panel meeting. As suggested by the committee at the previous meeting, the manual will go to all school schedulers, and site coordinators as well as on the web, and should be used in orientations with WVRHEP students. Other comments were that the manual would help differentiate between community service and research and would reiterate why community service is important. Jacquelynn reported that the New River Research Manual will also be published on the web. b. April reported on the Faculty Development Lunch session which will be held on Saturday, September 25, 1999 at AB College in Phillipi. The session will be a panel discussion of programs that have impacted WVRHEP. Speakers include Cecil Pollard on the Diabetes project, Bill Neal on the CARDIAC project, Jill Rosenthal on RHAP leadership, Sarah Jane Gainor on the Geriatric Education Center and Ken Shannon, WVU Family Medicine on a statewide research project. c. Committee Structure April discussed structure of the community outreach/curriculum committee and suggested that three sub-committees should be formed in order to handle different pieces: Curriculum, Community Outreach, and Research. There was some discussion as to whether these sub-committees needed to exist. Each sub-committee would need to discuss objectives/goals for their committee and what they wish to focus upon. The committee decided to receive feedback from the Advisory Panel on whether this would be the best structure to handle issues. Committee members and guests present were asked to indicate the sub-committee in which they would like to participate. Community Outreach: Karen Fahey, Jennifer Allen, Patricia Crawford, Amy Thomas, Curriculum: James Nemitz, Chuck Conner Research: d. Meeting Structure - Each sub-committee should have a chair and April asked committee members to be thinking about who might best chair these sub-committees and the structure of the membership. Members of the committee could sign up for any sub-committees they were interested in and they could meet during the first hour (8:30-9:30AM) and the full committee would meet 9:30-10:30AM with reports from the sub-committees. Each of the sub-committees would need to define clearly the types of issues they would like to deal with as a committee. There was a suggestion that the sub-committee could receive information via a problem list as used previously. The structure of the sub-committees was approved (Bors/Crawford). IV. New Business a. Bill reported that Lamont Nottingham is involved with an interdisciplinary project dealing with cardiovascular issues. Students will be presenting on this project at the Rural Health Conference. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
