Bill Neal MD presented information on the Coronary Artery Risk Detection in Appalachian Communities (CARDIAC). This project deals with 5th grade students in several communities in WV. There is a high CV disease in WV and the CARDIAC project addresses this health statistic. The project works through the WVRHEP sites and the Healthy Schools Initiative with RHEP as the platform. The past year has been the pilot phase. 349 children participated which is a little less than half the 5th grades. 22% were positive for CAD risk factors. BMI’s are conducted on each child as well as several surveys on physical activity and diet. The first child cardiology prevention clinic will be held at WVSOM next week and the project is collaborating with all three schools in order to do this. CWIP, and interactive wellness program from Wheeling Jesuit will be used in the schools this year. Testing will occur at 7 schools this year. Media will be used to promote the program as well as focus group session with parents. Chuck suggested site coordinators and others involved look at this from a service learning objective. Hilda suggested we use the student advisory committee for an oversight function as well. Dr. Neal reported that next year one county out of each consortium will be involved. Jacquelynn suggested the project be promoted through students and field faculty to receive more involvement on-campus. B. Jill Rosenthal reported on the Rural Health Access Program Grant which is currently being written and reviewed. This is a leaders pipeline which is involving RHEP and focuses on leadership development and service learning for students. Currently, Jill is working with Hilda, April, Jacquelynn, Kelly, Chuck and Elizabeth to develop the components. Student will be able to apply for a fellowship/scholarship as a team or individual. The project will be similar to the SEARCH grant, offering financial assistance to RHEP students who are willing to participate in the program. These students will participate in leadership workshops as well as individual learning modules. The development of these modules us currently being developed. The application and interview process of potential students is also being discussed. The question of the formation of interdisciplinary student groups was discussed and how this might happen when students do not know each other. How will we create these? Will preference be given to teams? Jill asked for any feedback from the committee to go to her or one of the site coordinators working on the leadership development committee. The current plan is to pilot the program in two sites. Jill discussed the gaps in the program. The curriculum is in the process of being developed. Hilda, the student advisory committee and school committee will give input. Input is also needed on skills development or leadership modules already out there would be helpful. The next meeting of the leadership committee will be June 25, 1999 at 9AM at the Center for Rural Health Development in Charleston. If you have comments, please send them to jrosenthal@citynet.net C. Cecil Pollard reported on the WV Bureau Comprehensive Diabetes Project. Six $2,000 grants were awarded to five different consortia. The range in activities is phenomenal. They range from screening programs to educational materials and other innovative ways to screen communities. A similar project will be conducted this year offering $2,500 to each community. The program runs March 1st through June 30. RFP’s for the coming year will be out after July 1. Final reports from site coordinators will be due by June 30th. Six new or same sites will be picked next year in a competitive process. The committee will have the opportunity to see results at a later date. If interested, contact Trisha for more information.
