Richard Meckstroth Brief history of the Community Outreach Committee 1. Unresolved Issues a. Community Outreach Manual for Health Professions Students b. The Difference between research & community outreach c. IRB approval what needs to be approved and what doesn’t. Jerry Spiegler agreed to work with all RHEP sites on questions regarding IRB approval. d. Caregiver Project - Another group focusing on this issue Dr. Meckstroth stated the only issue he remembered still being unresolved for the curriculum committee was the outreach manual. B. April gave a brief statement focusing on how she saw the group evolving and asked the members to discuss how the group should function. The following ideas were suggested: 1. Stay focused on Outreach and Curriculum Issues. 2. IDS, clinical curriculum issues. 3. Community Service & Research. 4. Help to guide quality and content. 5. Monitor quality assurance issues and set standards. 6. Act as a sounding board for the sites. 7. Sharing & Networking. 8. Statewide projects. 9. Apply critical thinking to community service projects. Assist in this process. 10. Tie activities into curricular development. 11. Sharing fellowship award projects with the group. 12. Bring activities we do at sites to develop service learning. 13. Work with the student advisory panel. 14. Develop modules around health concerns such as diabetes. C. Dr. Montalto “Tar Wars Program” Report D. Cecil Pollard Diabetes Community Projects Report Six communities will be awarded $2,000.00 grants. The goals include prevention or reducing the harmful outcomes of diabetes. Community projects that will involve students and be completed by June 30th of this year. Project applications should be submitted by December and funding will be awarded in January 1999. Specific questions may be directed to Cecil Pollard or Trisha Pettite. These grants will be offered each year for the next five years to those who wish to apply. III. Next Meeting Date April will contact everyone after the Advisory Panel meeting schedule is set to announce the next meeting date. IV.
