Faculty Development Committee Minutes October 10, 1998 Attendees: Jim Malone, Kathleen Bors, Jacquelyn Copenhaver, Symon Satow, Jill Cochran, Helen Baker, Bob Foster, RPh, Sherri Payette, Rosie Cannarella, Imogene Foster, Amy R. Allen, Chuck Conner and Dan Brody New and Potential Members: A Marshall University contact/representative is needed to serve on the Faculty Development Committee. A request indicating this need should be sent to the Dean at Marshall University. Sherri Payette and Jim Malone were introduced as new members of the committee replacing Jacquelynn Copenhaver and Mark Waddell. Kathleen Bors was introduced as a potential member of the committee. Informal Feedback on Faculty Development Day Positive responses were received from some new and more senior field faculty regarding Faculty Development Day. Meetings by discipline were great, but sessions could have been extended for longer period of time. It would be helpful to have discipline-specific sessions where information presented at the plenary session could be applied. The edifying part of the two (2) day sessions was listening to each other. It is good to reinforce topics, approaches and applications as well as learning new concepts. The small groups were the key in "Take Home Skills" development. Professional facilitation was valuable in keeping topics and the audience on target. Small group breakout sessions could have been better organized. Copies of cases prepared by RHEP Field Faculty should be sent to all site coordinators; these cases may be a helpful tool for IDS topic developments. Most participants would have preferred a classroom type setting, with tables and chairs as opposed to only chairs. The audience requires more room to write and spread out. The hotel needed to provide signs stating there was a RHEP meeting with date and times, which rooms were designated as RHEP rooms and a map of the room location. The stars and ribbons on name tags made networking more helpful. A suggestion was made to put first and last names in large print as opposed to first name only in large print on nametags. A signal implemented (a timer) to start or regroup meetings in the future would be helpful. Prize drawings were fun and should definitely be continued on Faculty Development Day. Simultaneous Site Coordinator and Field Faculty training cause more pressure on Office of Rural Health staff. Joint sessions with Site Coordinators may be helpful (depending on the topic) in order to share ideas, discuss processes, etc. Identifying topics/components that are appropriate for both Field Faculty and Site Coordinators would enable them to communicate and have better participation. "Service Learning" may be a good topic for next year. The Breakfast Roundtable Session was very well attended. The committee came to the conclusion that Faculty Development Day should be separated from the Rural Health Conference. History of Faculty Development Committee Helen Baker presented a brief review of the History of the Faculty Development Committee. Committee Membership & School Representatives Dan Brody chose to remain on the Faculty Development Committee, while Bob Foster chose to talk with Amy Wayne Brabbin about being his replacement. Kathleen Bors or Dorian Williams will be considered for committee membership from WVU and Rosie Cannarella will talk to Hilda regarding the process for new representation (Medicine and Nursing) from Marshall University. Field Faculty Position Description The committee reviewed the draft of the job description with changes made by Imogene Foster. The field faculty job description will be used as a guide for this system. The draft of the job description was accepted. Imogene will forward a copy of the revised version to Hilda with a request for policy review and also a request to forward a copy to Mountain Health Partner's Board. Chuck expressed interest in "Trola", a recruitment method. A system for performance review of field faculty is needed. MDTV/IDS PLAN Chuck is looking for a volunteer host consortium for the MDTV/IDS session. Jill Cochran agreed to host this session with some assistance. A request was made to consider participation NOT to be mandatory. On Site Clinical Coordinators could introduce the case early and then pull a group together conducting part at the site and another via MDTV with experts on hand. Suggested topic is "Rural Health Ethics" conducted by Woody Moss and Jacquelyn Glover. The committee would like for Hilda to talk to MDTV regarding their interest in hosting another IDS, including gratis airtime. There is a need to consider implications for RHEP sites without MDTV. MDTV sessions could be used as tools to augment/further develop IDS at struggling sites. A suggestion was made to invite On Site Clinical Directors as well as School Representatives to participate in order to build a better IDS sessions on site. Rosie recommended a nurse practitioner to host a session tackling a broad issue like "Ethics". This could be sponsored in coordination with WVU Rural Health Fair or MSII class, with a potential date in February. Chuck will contact April regarding details with MDTV. On Site Clinical Directors A contact list could be developed by topic to use as a resource - Speakers Bureau - with a mix of campus and field faculty. A great idea is for this list to be put on the web site. Can CEU's be obtained and can they be offered free? Can the school be used as a resource? Helen will post e-mail to RHEP discussion list and Sandy will compile evaluations for committee's review. Rosie will send a letter to remind them of the due date. Jacquelynn will coordinate and compile each consortium's plan. Problem List for Faculty Development Committee The process for evaluation of Field Faculty at the site needs to be reviewed. The committee wants to invite Cecil Pollard to sit in on the process as a representative of Evaluation Committee.
