Jodie distributed the minor
revisions to Policy 98-02 (Minimal Requirements for WVRHEP Student Status) and
for the Definition of Type of Student that were discussed at various committee
meetings, including the Evaluation Committee meeting, on May 19 and informed
the group that these documents would be voted on by the Advisory Panel today
(July 21). Jodie acknowledged ROVER’s
objections to not counting the rotations of non-higher education students such
as LPN students but since these objections were not re-iterated at the May
meetings, the proposed policies will go to the Advisory Panel for vote
today. Hilda explained that legislators
appear more interested in RHEP resources going for training of residents in
rural areas rather than training of non-higher education students. She also acknowledged the current nursing
shortage but said that the shortage is for RNs and not for LPNs.
Sheryll Tennant informed the
committee that the changes to the SERFE and Baseline Data Questionnaire and new
dental SERFE and Dental Baseline Data Questionnaire were submitted to WVU IRB
on June 17, 2003 and should be an expedited review. We are expecting to hear back from IRB soon, possibly this week.
Jodie reported the solution proposed by Mike McCarthy
for the difficulty that site coordinators have when trying to change in student
status from RHEP to "Other Rural" in the case where students were
assigned a non-RHEP preceptor (and, hence, could not be classified as an RHEP
rotation). This issue was resolved by
allowing a site coordinator to verify a rotation without designating a specific
SITE or PRECEPTOR OF RECORD (i.e., leaving both fields at the "Select
One" selection). We are trying to
prevent this situation from occurring by educating the campus coordinators that
a rotation cannot be RHEP if the student is not with an RHEP preceptor, even
though the student may participate in IDS and community service activities.
Jodie distributed the revised Tracking Plan for
tracking the practice location of graduates.
The revised plan will request practice address in addition to name,
residency state, residency specialty, zip code and practice specialty.
The proposed policy change
regarding interdisciplinary education while on rural rotation was distributed
and introduced for discussion. There
were no objections during the meeting to this policy. Members were advised to email April with their concerns soon
since this will be brought up to the Advisory Panel for vote at the September
meeting. Helen Baker emphasized that it
is up to the individual campus course coordinator whether or not students are
required to attend the mock IDS sessions that are held on campus to prepare
students for the IDS sessions at their rural site.
The Evaluation Committee was
presented with a draft of responses to Objective B5.1 of the Visions 2000
document for discussion. During the
meeting, the committee drafted a response to Objective 3.1 and made suggestions
for changes to the responses to Objective B5.1. Jodie will make these additions and changes and email to the
committee this week for their review.
She told them a quick turn-around would be necessary since the committee
drafting the changes to the Visions 2000 document is eager to complete their
work.
