between 1/1/01 and 6/30/01. The winners for this year's drawing were:

Michael Sanger, WVSOM, Class of 2001 (check sent)

Janine Love, WVU, Dental Hygiene, Class of 2002
Matthew Miller, WVU, School of Dentistry, Class of 2001
Teresa Ritchie, WVU-Charleston, School of Nursing, Class of 2001
Checks will be sent out as soon as the WVU Office of Rural Health receives
verification of addresses and other info from the student-winners.
The schedule of automatic reminder emails (to complete the RHEP evaluation) was discussed. Currently, Campus Coordinators do not receive a copy of the reminder email sent to the student until 3 weeks after the rotation has ended, which is a copy of the 3rd reminder email sent to the student. Campus coordinators would like to receive a copy earlier of the email sent to the student one week after completion of the rotation. Jodie will follow-up on this with Mike McCarthy.
Ken Shannon reported on preliminary data from the Medical Student Baseline
Data Questionnaire. This information concerned demographic
data or questionnaire responses that correlated with the reported intent
to practice in WV and in rural areas. Factors associated with the
likelihood of living in West Virginia after training included
1) home city rural, 2) West Virginia home, 3) primary care as their
preferred area of specialization and 4) interest in practicing in a town
of <10,000. Factors associated with the likelihood of practicing
in a town with a population < 10,000 included 1) responding affirmatively
that they were likely to stay in West Virginia, 2) stating that they were
from a rural home town, 3) devaluing the importance of career prestige,
4) devaluing the importance of career income, and 5) having a primary care
intent.
Helen Baker presented a revised copy of the site coordinator
evaluation of RHEP students used by some of the consortium for review by
the Evaluation Committee. The Evaluation Committee voted that this
form be presented to the School Committee and the site coordinators for
approval AND that use of this form be encouraged. The School Committee
should decide who the "point people" should be at each school. Introduction
to this form should be part of the rural orientation. Evaluation
and feedback to school faculty need to take place in a timely fashion.
Discussion ensued regarding if and how RHEP can address the malpractice
problem in the state. Ken Shannon has some data that might be useful
to the legislative discussion which he volunteered to pass on to Alicia
Tyler.
