Also present were: Jacqueline Copenhaver (New River Health Association), Rudy Filek (WVU - CCPE), Ray Joseph (WVU School of Medicine), Monty Knottingham (AHEC), Amy Reasinger (WVU - CCPE), and Gary Kukulka (Osteopathic School of Medicine). ABSENT: Natalie Ames (WVU Interdisciplinary Curriculum Coordinator), Helen Baker (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Anne Brown (RHI Site Coordinator), William Carlton (Project Director), Anne Cutlip (WVU School of Medicine), David Elliott (WVU School of Pharmacy), Jan Fox (MU School of Medicine), Arnold Hassen (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Cecil Pollard (WVU School of Medicine), Sharon Pressman (RHI Site Coordinator), Louise Reese (RHI Site Coordinator), Barbara Rice (Cameron Site Coordinator), Diana Stotts (MU School of Nursing), and Tom Whittier (Joint Governing Committee). This meeting was held at the Days Inn in Flatwoods, West Virginia. I. Suggestions for Evaluating RHI/Kellogg: Dr. Savory recommends looking at Items that would be measurable and would justify the existence of RHI/Kellogg. This would justify RHI/Kellogg's continued presence and expand supporting days to come. Dr. Savory will bring the Committee's suggestions of what should be measured for this year to justify further state funding to David Ellenwood. Some measurable items to look at would be: - What do you think the students are getting out of RHI/Kellogg that they did not get before? - What has the curriculum done? - What is going on now that was not going on before? - Is it more fun? PAGE 2 KGCC 02/21/95 II. Assessing Community Component Suggestions: Dr. Savory recommends expanding services (i.e. new skills, faculty, increase in patient base by virtue of the clinic being more visible, trusted, more community coordinated). She also recommends tracking patient outcomes (i.e. fewer medicines given, less confusion) and tracking community services of off-site immunizations. A good measurement tool would be a patient compliance questionnaire that would show the amount of time spent in patient preventative activities. A tool that the New River site used to assess their community activities was by collating their projects and having four or five individuals rate the projects and determine the significant contributions gained from these projects. Dr. Savory suggest having a central place for recording community service data. This would enable the site coordinators to tap into the rural net and obtain ideas for community projects. A questionnaire needs to be developed to measure the quality assurance functions, the impact other programs have on Kellogg/RHI, and the available services at the site. Suggestions for borrowing students from campus for community projects: John Mooney recommends notifying the students about the community project approximately a month prior to the students arrival at the site. This would allow the students sufficient time to prepare for the project (i.e., research, etc). He also recommended that the site coordinators network and share the students and professional resources. III. Assessing TEAM Component Schools and sites need to increase networking, i.e. via telephone conferences, computer Internet and Rural Network. The amount of financial support used for travel, telephone calls, computer, and personnel needs to be assessed. PAGE 3 KGCC 02/21/95 IV. Research A way to streamline approval for community projects is an ongoing issue thatneeds to be addressed by the Research Committee. Future Research Meeting: DATE: March 20, 1995 TIME: 12:30 p.m. PLACE: Shoney's, Flatwoods, WV V. Faculty Development Activities (Natalie Ames) It was noted that the School Committee can facilitate long range problems the Curriculum Committee may have. Richard Meckstroth recommends that site coordinators write down the activities the students participate in and how well they are done. Chuck Conner said that the students need an enhanced view of how the community project they participate in relates to their future. The handbook is a good place to give more information and an insight into the community projects. The students should be given the handbook and the site orientation book before arriving at the site. VI. School Committee This committee was formed by Don Weston two years ago. Members of this group are: Hilda Heady, Robert Walker, Mary Huntley, Don Weston, and John Mooney. Representatives from each school meet approximately every six months to solve problems and to find a way to make problem solving easier. David Ellenwood is interested in increasing programmatic evaluation and would facilitate for the Curriculum Committee the development of resources to assist in measuring the kinds of things needed as a Curriculum Committee to further assist curricular development of resources. VII. Rural Network The New River paper is available through the Rural Network. The point of contact is Michael McCarthy, Marshall University, Academic Computing Program Coordinator, (304) 696-6372. PAGE 4 KGCC 02/21/95 A central place is needed to record community data to allow each Field Professor and RHI Site Coordinator to read over the list and possibly get ideas to help with the network. A list of rural health issues and a survey of field faculty wishes can be developed on the Rural Network along with a list of rural health issues. The site coordinators are the intermediary between problems of home access (notebook) computers, license issues "pirating", etc. 1) E-Mail Information: The future Curriculum Committee minutes, agenda, and notice of meetings will be sent via E-Mail. The point of contact for this is Donna Rahilly, 696- 7010, DRAHILLY@MUSOM02.MU.WVNET.EDU. Members who do not have access to E-Mail will receive all correspondence in the mail. It was noted that Judy Kandzari and Clarke Ridgway do not have access to E-Mail. 2) Indirect benefits of Rural Network: A good example of an indirect benefit is how nursing utilized the Rural Network to develop a diabetes support group for the diabetes awareness day. VIII. Assessing Community/TEAM Components Recommendation has been made to do a survey to see what is needed in the community. The sites would collect the same amount of data for the survey. The Curriculum Committee needs to decide on a way to track this survey. Jacqueline Copenhaver said that the return rate of site survey's has not been good. She recommends that the site coordinators collect these survey's and send them. The evaluation should be standardized and formal. Dr. Savory recommends using rural net instead of monthly meetings of site coordinators. PAGE 5 KGCC 02/21/95 Evaluation of the Students: Ray Joseph noted that some sites do not have MDS and therefore cannot grade on MDS. Judy Kandzari is combining evaluation information. John Mooney recommends letting the students know that the evaluation will be part of their grade. IX. Field Faculty Survey Dr. Savory recommends conducting a survey of the wishes of Field Faculty via David Ellenwood. X.
