KELLOGG GRANT CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES NOVEMBER 16, 1993 PRESENT: William Carlton (Project Director), Chuck Conner (Spencer Kellogg Site Coordinator), David Elliott (WVU School of Pharmacy), Norman Ferrari (WVU School of Medicine), Robert Foster (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Jean Gross (WVU School of Dentistry), Jean Hoff (WVU School of Nursing), Dianne Hughes (Camden on Gauley Kellogg Site Coordinator), Judith Kandzari (WVU School of Nursing), Randy Lowe (Rainelle Medical Center), Heather McCutcheon (Minnie Hamilton RHI Site Coordinator), Annie McIntosh (Joint Governing Committee), John Mooney (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Trish Petitte (WVU Health Services Research), Cecil Pollard (WVU Health Services Research), Barbara Rice (Cameron Kellogg Site Coordinator), Clarke Ridgway (WVU School of Pharmacy), Linda Savory (MU School of Medicine), Diana Stotts (MU School of Nursing), and April Vestal (Rainelle Kellogg Site Coordinator). ABSENT: Richard Meckstroth (WVU School of Dentistry), Lynne Welch (MU School of Nursing), and Tom Whittier (Community Member, Joint Governing Committee). The meeting was held in Spencer, West Virginia. I. Community Concerns There were no community concerns stated at this time. II. Research Report John Mooney stated that there is a new staff member, Dr. Gary Kukulka, who has been with the National Rural Health Association for a number of years. Dr. Kukulka will be replacing John Mooney on the Research Sub-Committee. III. Faculty Issue It was mentioned by John Mooney that at the last Joint Governing Committee meeting it was decided that all seven deans would meet with Dr. Weston anda final decision will be made regarding faculty appointment. Evaluation Report Interviews were just completed with the field professors, according to Cecil Pollard. Multidisciplinary sessions have been going well. Field professors expressed interest in case studies. They were informed that there is a program listing all cases; a procedure list describing how to get access to this program will be distributed. V. Student Placement John Mooney announced that Ray Joseph will be in charge of coordinating the student placement form to each of the site coordinators. The desired format is to arrange form monthly by academic year. Site coordinators will be asked for the number of students they can accommodate each month by discipline. Other issues covered will be housing, best directions to their site from the home institution, contact person, and brief description of the program. The information will be requested a year in advance. Information will be requested from the coordinators beginning in January. The institutions will get together in March to make assignments. VI. Student Orientation Kellogg/RHI student orientation will be discussed at the December meeting. Ray Joseph will be meeting with the site coordinators soon to discuss this issue. VII. Survey - Faculty Development Dr. Savory announced that both new and old faculty have rank ordered the faculty needs survey for faculty development. All field professors are invited to submit or conduct a workshop that could be sent to Dr. Savory for a proposal. Below are the results of the needs assessment for faculty development: 1) faculty orientation workshop 2) techniques for precepting in the field 3) new/advanced preceptor workshop 4) research workshop 5) field computer application workshop 6) community assessment workshop 7) case writing workshop 8) visiting clinicians appropriations Page Three Kellogg Grant Curriculum Committee Minutes 9) students evaluation workshop 10) team building VIII. Newsletter Ray Joseph announced that a Kellogg newsletter is currently being distributed to everyone. He announced that faculty are invited to submit information to him for the newsletter. IX. Miscellaneous There were students and field professors available for the meeting. The students felt that the experience was a good experience and definitely enhanced their education. They felt that the multidisciplinary setting was a definite positive experience. This gave the students a whole view of the patients. The sessions also give the students a chance to learn to communicate with other disciplines. At times there are some personality conflicts. The students do not feel that four months is long enough an experience. The student said they used the learning resource center alot for course studies. X. Next Meeting Date The next Curriculum Committee meeting will be held on December 10 in Charleston (CAMC, Room 2015 from 10 - 3). Lunch will be served in Room 2015 at 12:00 noon. The RHI site coordinators will be meeting in Room 2014 from 10 - 12. The plan is for the coordinators to join the Curriculum Committee meeting in Room 2015 so that questions and problems can be discussed. _____________________________________________ Linda M.
