KELLOGG GRANT CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES OCTOBER 19, 1993 PRESENT: Chuck Conner (Roane County Family Health Care, Inc., Site Coordinator), David Elliott (WVU School of Pharmacy), Robert Foster (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Jean Gross (WVU School of Dentistry), Dianne Hughes (Camden on Gauley Medical Center, Site Coordinator), Heather McCutcheon (Rural Health Initiative, Site Coordinator), Judith Kandzari (WVU School of Nursing), Richard Meckstroth (WVU School of Dentistry), Trish Petitte (WVU Health Services Research), Clarke Ridgway (WVU School of Pharmacy), Linda Savory (MU School of Medicine), Diana Stotts (MU School of Nursing), and April Vestal (Rainelle Medical Center, Site Coordinator). ABSENT: William Carlton (Project Director), Norman Ferrari (WVU School of Medicine), Jan Fox (MU School of Medicine), John Mooney (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Cecil Pollard (WVU Health Services Research), James Shumway (WVU School of Medicine), Marian Swinker (WVU School of Medicine), Lynne Welch (MU School of Nursing), and Tom Whittier (Community member, Joint Governing Committee). The meeting was held in Flatwoods, West Virginia. I. Community Concerns No community members were present at this meeting. Chuck Conner stated that he has not heard of any new community issues relating to curriculum. II. Kellogg/RHI Orientation Dr. Savory announced that at the last Joint Governing Committee meeting Dr. Weston stressed that in orientation and recruitment there is an attempt to favor no one site. Site individuality cannot rank above the rural experience. His concern is that when we assign students to sites that there could be a problem. Heather McCutcheon stated that the RHI site coordinators were coordinating their site data in this cooperative light. KGCC 10/93 Page Two Ray Joseph stated that everyone should now have a Kellogg video. Members decided that the draft of the handbook be redistributed and all disciplines make changes as they feel necessary to assure uniform presite orientation. Chuck Conner recently called all the schools and sites regarding orientation needs and goals. Chuck will fax this information to Dr. Savory to be included as an enclosure to the minutes. III. Student Placement No new news reported. IV. Research Report Spencer stated that research is now on hold because Carroll Christiansen is on sabbatical at Marshall University School of Medicine. V. Evaluation Trish Petitte stated that the annual report was much more difficult to prepare than had been anticipated. More information had to be obtained than had been planned. She also has been working on a 92/93 multidisciplinary session needs report to be finalized soon. Site visits are now taking place for the academic year and the first site visit will be at the Cameron site in early November. The field faculty and students will be interviewed. Trish stated that during the KGCC meeting on November 16, she would like to complete a site visit. Also an Evaluation Committee will be held following the KGCC meeting in Spencer on November 16. David Elliott stated that information has been put together from all the disciplines by the Student Assessment Sub- Committee. The Curriculum Committee affirmed the need for an annual report. KGCC 10/93 Page Three VI. Faculty Development Dr. Savory announced that Dan Doyle recently held a faculty and preceptor development workshop coupled with the Beckley Rural Health meeting. Dr. Doyle would be willing to repeat the workshop with appropriate notice. The faculty development workshop responses prepared by Dr. Savory are included with the minutes. It was suggested that the field faculty be better introduced to integrate with the faculty on the campus. Dr. Savory announced that all faculty development money will be approved by Dr. Weston and he will present to the Finance Sub-Committee. VII. Medical Field Professor - Cameron Site A curriculum vitae was distributed on Richard Irvin, D.O. Arrangements are being made to add Dr. Irvin as field professor at the Cameron site. Dr. Savory stated that Dr. Stookey's committee is currently devising a policy for determing school affiliation for field professors. VIII. New Business The issue of community members attending multidisciplinary sessions was discussed. The committee agreed upon a policy statement regarding multidisciplinary sessions as follows: "community participation is encouraged at all multidisciplinary sessions. It is recognized that due to the sensitive nature of some cases, it would be left up to the chief facilitator to open the case to the community. If it is a real case, then permission should be obtained from the patient. KGCC 10/93 Page Four IX. Meeting Schedule The next meeting will be held in Spencer on November 16 from 11:00 am - 1:30 pm with the agenda being 11:00 - 12 noon, general business; 12 noon - 12:30 pm, students available/lunch; 12:30 - 1:30 pm, field professors/general business. THE MONTH OF DECEMBER MEETING HAS BEEN CHANGED. A MEETING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 10 TO COINCIDE WITH THE RHI SITE COORDINATORS MEETING. THE MEETING WILL BE HELD AT THE WAFFLE INN IN FLATWOODS. The meeting will be held from 10:30 - 12:00 noon, and thereafter the committee will be available for the RHI site coordinators.
