I. Change in 7/20/93 Minutes Jean Gross was omitted from the list of those absent from the 7/20/93 meeting. II. Community Concerns April Vestal stated that at recent election for a community mentor there were six people up for election. Only three were selected. She also stated that students are requesting more outside activity. Norman Ferrari recommended that students have adoptive families to introduce them into the community. Students could be matched up with a mentor and let mentor what the guidelines are. April Vestal brought up the issue of library cards for students. She was informed that students will receive a card with a student identification number or some official notification. KGCC Minutes Page Two Chuck Conner brought the issue of field professor appointments. The Spencer location's lead institution is Marshall. Dr. Stookey is chair of a committee that will decide about the issue of appointments. There is no way to have these people in the tenure track. It is desired that the field professors not be in a courtesy track by a real clinical faculty track. These guys would be eligible for free CME credit. The original grant was evasive regarding this issue. Bill Carlton will write a letter to the Joint Governing Committee regarding the issue of appointment for field professors with lead institution or whichever institution they want. Dr. Savory will then inform them of the following: 1) are we or are we not going to have assignment through institution 2) will they receive free CME credit like regular faculty 3) primary appointment with one school and adjunct appoint with the other schools April Vestal stated that students are wanting more student orientation. The sites can not do all the orientation. It was suggested that the site coordinators go to all sites. The site coordinators could come all on the same day or different days. Video or slides could be used. It was discussed whether this could take place over lunch or during class time. The site coordinators could bring former students with them for recruitment. This type of orientation will take place as soon as coordinators can put together presentation. Hopefully more than one discipline would go to schools to present the Kellogg/RHI demo to the students. It was recommended that this orientation to the students with slides be prepared by early this year. III. Student Placement John Mooney stated that at the last Joint Governing Committee a draft was distributed giving the student placement information. John Mooney has drafted a student placement form and is working on placement with all the sites. It was added that a computerized system is currently being developed for future use. KGCC Minutes Page Three IV. Pre-Site Research Training It was stated that there is concern about pre-site research training. Dr. Savory asked the committee what responses they have. It was recommended that there be pre-site research training. Norman Ferrari added that WVU is having a difficult time of adding to the current student curriculum. V. Evaluation Report David Elliott's handout was distributed at the meeting. After reading the report, members are to bring comments back to the next meeting. VI. Research Committee John Mooney distributed minutes from the Research Committee meeting. VII. Miscellaneous Susan Richie attended today's meeting. She is a former pharmacy student at Camden on Gauley. She stated that she was very hesitant about moving to a smaller community. Once she got involved with the Kellogg rotation, she feels that the experience was one of the most important of her academic career. She stated that there was alot of independent study involved. The student is now working as a pharmacist in Ohio. The multidisciplinary sessions were a good experience for her. The interaction between disciplines was good. There were two current students now located at COG present. They both expressed that it would be great if all disciplines were represented. One dental student was present and stated that he was experiencing a good education. The multidisciplinary sessions have been good. It was felt that more input was needed from other areas. The student is stating that they are getting a more hands-on exposure. Gil Steiner and Chip Perrone (field profesors) were present at this meeting. They both felt that students benefit from the multidisciplinary sessions. The students in this program get to deal with real people/patients. April Vestal added that visiting faculty at her site has gone well in the past. The faculty got to see the clinic first hand.
