The meeting was called to order at approximately 10:35 am. I. NEW MEMBER Tom Whittier was present is a now a new member of the Curriculum Committee. Mr. Whittier mentioned that didactic and clinical issues were discussed at the June 14 Joint Governing Committee. Other concerns mentioned at the JGC was the team approach. The team approach needs to be not only on site but also at the community level. Jean Hoff added that she felt there was a general lack of understanding of what a true team is. As new faculty are recruited, we will need to arrange for new faculty orientation and development. Further faculty development will focus on precepting multiple students. Mr. Whittier added that leadership intervention is needed and not meetings. Someone from the academic are needs to bring the players together from the academic site; something that will bring the people together at the local site. Another concern of the Joint Governing Committee is that there is a lack of mutual understanding of the goals and objectives of the Curriculum Committee. Dr. Savory added that information is now being compiled in answer to Dr. Pollard's evaluation report. This will be presented at the next Joint Governing KGCC 6/15/93 Page Two Committee. Each item will be addressed and a recommended resolution given. II. MULTIDISCIPLINARY SESSIONS April Vestal added that their field professors are usually at every meeting. Some students felt that the field professors dominate the multidisciplinary sessions. Dr. Hanlon came up with the idea of the SADIST as a means of keeping students actively involved. She added that this idea has worked well for them. Dr. Savory will distribute the SADIST report to everyone. Mr. Whittier suggested that a policy be made that in the absence of students the appropriate field professors be present at the multidisciplinary sessions. This was agreed by the Curriculum Committee. Dr. Savory will write a letter to the Joint Governing Committee asking that this issue be a policy. III. RESEARCH Members proposed that a research workshop be held for field professors. A video taping format or workshop format could be used. Issues that need to be directed to the Research Sub-Committee are: - Limitations (need faculty guidance and support) - Amount of student time to be allocated to research: approximately 10%. - Incorporate research with practice (students and field professors are important and ideas should spring from their practice.) Chuck Conner added that he felt the research component is going quite well. Each discipline was asked what was the maximum percentage of time is devoted to the research component. The responses were: Pharmacy 10% Dentistry 20% Nursing <10% undergraduate level, and 30% graduate level Medicine 10 - 20% John Mooney, who attends the Research Sub-Committee meetings, will relay our concerns to that committee and report back. KGCC 6/15/93 Page Three IV. STUDENT PLACEMENT Dr. Savory will fax to John Mooney and Norman Ferrari the availability of slots at each site for medical students. Jean Hoff will determine nursing student assignments and Clarke Ridgway will report the pharmacy student assignments. Dr. Savory will distribute this information with the minutes. V. PRE-SITE KELLOGG Dr. Hassen distributed his school's syllabus of their Introduction to Family Practice Course. This is the Kellogg megacourse and will be enclosed with the minutes. Dr. Savory added that questions regarding the megacourse will be directed to the individual disciplines. VI. MISCELLANEOUS Dr. Savory distributed a medical field professor recruitment brochure that she recently compiled. Other disciplines could use a similar type of brochure that would be discipline- specific. Dr. Savory and Hilda Heady are designing a display for recruitment and conferences purposes. Anyone interested in expressing their needs for such a display unit should contact Dr. Savory or Hilda Heady. VII.
