KELLOGG GRANT CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES MAY 18, 1993 Present were: William Carlton (Project Director), Chuck Conner (Roane County Family Health Care, Inc., Site Coordinator), David Elliott (WVU School of Pharmacy), Robert Foster (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Jan Fox (MUSOM Academic Computing), Jean Gross (WVU School of Dentistry), Arnold Hassen (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Diane Hughes (Camden on Gauley, Site Coordinator), John Mooney (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Norman Ferrari (WVUSOM), Cecil Pollard (WVU Health Services Research), Linda Savory (MU School of Medicine -KGCC Chair), April Vestal (Rainelle Medical Center, Site Coordinator), and Lynne Welch (MU School of Nursing). Absent were: Judith Kandzari (WVU School of Nursing), Richard Meckstroth (WVU School of Dentistry), James Shumway (WVU School of Medicine), Diana Parnicza Stotts (MU School of Nursing), and Marian Swinker (WVU School of Medicine). The meeting was called to order at approximately 11:00 am. I. NURSING FACULTY DEVELOPMENT REQUEST Lynne Welch from MU School of Nursing has requested $6,000 to hold a two day workshop for nursing field professors and campus based faculty. The first day would be Critical Thinking and the second day would be Strategies for Teaching Critical Thinking. The cost of the presenter would be $1,000/day plus travel, lodging, and meals for a total cost of approximately $2,000. Cost per faculty $100/day = 1 day lodging and 1-1/2 days meals. Presenter: $ 2,000 MU (16 faculty) 1,600 Field Professors (6) 600 WVU (18 faculty) 1,800 The Curriculum Committee approved this request. Lynne Welch will notify site coordinators about this workshop when plans are finalized. II. SITE REPORTS Camden on Gauley Site - Diane Hughes reported that there not be students at her site this summer. Recently they moved into their new facility. KGCC Minutes Page Two Rainelle Site - April Vestal reported that student scheduling is a potential problem. Housing might be an issue. Dr. Savory announced that there is now a new sub-committee represented by each discipline that will deal with student placement. III. RURAL STUDENT MONTHS (RSM) John Mooney from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine will be on the new sub-committee dealing with student placement. He provided the following information regarding rural student months: Medicine: WVU 4 + 4 = 8 WVSOM 4 + 2 = 6 MUSOM 2 = 2 ___ 16 students x 6 months = 96 RSM Camden on Gauley (?) 2 medical students x 9 months = 18 Spencer 1 medical student x 12 months = 12 Rainelle 2 medical students x 12 months = 24 Cameron (?) 1 medical student x 6 months = 6 __ 60 RSM That would leave remaining 36 RSM and the problem of site placement. This sub-committee will have answered or have the plan by the end of the week. IV. UNMET PROGRAM OBJECTIVES AND PROBLEM LIST As part of an evaluation report Cecil Pollard is preparing, the following topics need to be addressed. i. The goals and objectives of the Curriculum Committee are not understood by the community serving on the Joint Governing Committee as indicated by the handout. Community members at each site expressed concern that the Curriculum Committee is too broad based in dealing with certain issues. They would like to know what specific KGCC Minutes Page Three issues this committee is considering and what are the long-term goals. Dr. Savory added that we gather the material from the sites. Chuck Conner added that Tom Whittier would like to be on the Curriculum Committee and is waiting for a response. Dr. Savory will send him a note inviting him to join the committee. ii. Field professors are not adequately represented on the Curriculum Sub-Committee. Dr. Savory suggested coupling field faculty with an academic university professor. Dr. Savory should be given this information. To date the following has been received: couplers for pharmacy will Clarke Ridgeway and David Elliott (another may be added for Cameron site); couplers for the School of Osteopathic Medicine will be Bob Foster, John Mooney, and Arnold Hassen. Monthly meetings or monthly telephone conference calls could be held. E-mail conferencing between the field professors was another suggestion. Another option is to encourage field professor attendance at the Curriculum Committee meetings or give input from the field professors to site coordinators prior to the Curriculum Committee. It was added that equipment is a problem; not everyone has access to E-mail. There could be a designated course coordinator for the home campus to meet with field professors. Dr. Savory will approach the Joint Governing Committee with this idea. iii. Multidisciplinary sessions may not be meeting all the needs of each discipline based on session topic and the student's educational level. Multidisciplinary sessions developed at rural sites may not be what the institutions and Curriculum Committee expects. Sessions may vary in style from site to site. Jan has all the multidisciplinary session topics in the rural network by site location and topic. Dr. Savory would like a task force developed to monitor the progress of the multidisciplinary sessions at all sites for consistency. Cecil is already collecting this data and the data will be analyzed. iv. Field professors would like topics and content for multidisciplinary sessions to be developed by the institutions or the curriculum committee. The multidisciplinary session cases have up to this point been distributed among the sites, but it has been requested that a contact person at each institution receive these cases. Jan Fox will maintain a list of session topics and their learning issues on the computer network. v. Multidisciplinary evaluation form may not adequately assess student's work in preparing for the sessions. David Elliott distributed a summary KGCC Minutes Page Four for the evaluation of multidisciplinary sessions for Fall of 1992. The multidisciplinary sessions were well received by the students. Student participation was good. The Multidisciplinary Student Assessment group will request that evaluations from Spring be completed prior to the June Curriculum Committee meeting. V. STUDENT COMMENTS Several students attended meeting and their comments made were: learning issues are broad, fairly structured learning opportunity, topics change every week for the multidisciplinary sessions, and most students expressed satisfaction with program. The form used by field professors to grade students will be modified to be more precise. Dr. Savory will send out a letter regarding the grading system to this committee. Jill Cochran distributed a handout that gave an overview of the year including barriers, boosters, and support requested. It was added that Jan Fox needs a list of courses that will be considered SatNet. VI. REPORT ON NETWORKING CONFERENCE ON CURRICULUM Bill Carlton thought the El Paso meeting was a good meeting. VII. DEVELOPING THE COMMUNITY Dr. Savory will write monthly to the field professors asking how they feel the team is functioning, how they can be helped, etc. Dr. Savory will report back to the committee her findings. VIII. MISCELLANEOUS Bill Hanlon and other field professors wanted to know if there would be changes in the curriculum as a result of the RHI/Kellogg Conference held in Flatwoods. Dr. Savory replied that there would be no changes in the Kellogg curriculum. KGCC Minutes Page Five Bill Hanlon asked whether the students would have computer training prior to being placed on site. Arnold Hassen replied that the Osteopathic students will have training. Jan Fox replied that MU students would have the training. Linda Jacknoiwitz will be in charge of WVU students receiving computer training. Bill stated that the field professors would like to receive feedback from the student's evaluation. Dr. Savory will write a letter to the institutional representatives saying that field professors are requesting the feedback that the institutions are collecting relative to their teaching performance. Bill Carlton stated that the annual report is due Ron Richards' office by September 1. This report should be ready in draft form by August 1. The forms to be used to collect the data was a handout at this meeting. Cecil Pollard will collect the information directly from the institutions and forward to Bill Carlton. Sandy Magnetti wants to assist us with the course which prepares students for rural health research. She will help with resources, textbooks, etc. Send to her office within a month your research piece. The next scheduled meeting will be held on June 15, Flatwoods from 10:30 - 2:00 pm. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 2:00 pm. Linda M. Savory, M.D.
