The meeting was called to order at approximately 11:00 am. I. TURNING CLINIC-BASED PRECEPTORSHIP TO COMMUNITY-BASED PRECEPTORSHIP This topic was discussed at the Kellogg El Paso meeting. Discovered at this meeting was that the various curricula were missing the boat on community issues. They are trying to export the existing curricula into a new site and calling it the "community academic health center." Originally it was planned that the students would spend 50% of their time would be spent on community issues. This does not mean that the student had to be out in the community all that time. Students could be conducting assessments or research on issues that the community values highly. Students could use a precepted case as a point of departure for discussing the community perspective. Arnold Hassen stated that originally the multidisciplinary sessions were considered half-day sessions and constitute community-based teaching. The activities that would occur in discipline-based structure throughout the rest of the week would include community components, i.e., treating patients, shadowing activities of other disciplines. This would expand KGCC Minutes April 27, 1993 Page Two the community-based and multidisciplinary time to 50 percent. Dr. Savory added that she will begin to look over the site reports and pull the information for a report to the Joint Governing Committee the community activities. Spelled out will be community activities, multidisciplinary sessions and case-related community health teaching. COMMUNITY PROCESS (From flip chart): 1) Field faculty form planning team. - community input - student input 2) Faculty development team. - limited to realistic expectations of field professor - site visits: a) interact with community b) bringing information to institutions - quarterly report to Curriculum Committee regarding five Kellogg courses II. STUDENT REPRESENTATION AT THE MEETING There were three students represented at the meeting: one MU School of Medicine, and two WVU. Also attending was a pharmacy field professor. The dental student commented that she was a little bogged down with community activities one week. Students requested more exposure to hospital clinical experience, particularly rounds. It was suggested that second year students round with the third year students to see what it is like to be in a clinical setting. III. REVISION OF MULTIDISCIPLINARY CASES It was discussed that we now have a library of clinical cases that are currently being distributed to the site coordinators. Also, cases will be distributed not only to the sites but also to the schools. It was suggested that KGCC Minutes April 27, 1993 Page Three some cases could be refined and used again. IV. STUDENT EVALUATION Propose trial written case for site-placed students with campus-based control group. This was referred to the Research Committee. David Elliott reported that there was no new information at this time. V. The next meeting will be held at the Rainelle Medical Center on May 18, 11:00 am.
