II Brainstorming New Directions for Curriculum Research component: Cecil Pollard prepared a memorandum containing the Evaluation Sub-Committee's report on the results of the interviews with key informants. The interviews were conducted from late November 1992 through January 1993. Cecil added that they are now trying to identify campus liaison contacts that would deal specifically with research issues. Research was determined to be multidisciplinary and could be service based and community oriented. Cecil added that research could be neutral and would not be restricted to any one discipline. Arnie Hassen added that research issues can develop centrally. David Elliott stated that 25% of time is devoted to electives for pharmacy students. KGCC Minutes Page Two It was discussed that research should involve the following: - research at different levels (basic students, advanced students, faculty) - clinical experience-related - institutions must change the institutional view - Public Health involvement in research, both pre-Kellogg and at Kellogg sites All disciplines should identify their reflections on research and submit to Diane prior to the next meeting. III Community Health and the Curriculum Fifty percent of the student's time will be devoted to community experience. Students must contact the community. Strategies discussed to accomplish this were: - take community diagnosis and relate to particular patient. - interact with community (health fairs, school-based health education). - experiences with health department, AA, public schools (serving as role models). IV Curriculum in the Community Students want more time in the clinic. The community requirement needs to be in writing. Everyone to write Dr. Savory about the community component. V Miscellaneous It was decided at this meeting that every other meeting beginning in March would be held at the sites. The next meeting will be held in Spencer on March 16, beginning at 11:00. It was discussed that everyone should attend a multidisciplinary session and report back to this committee. It was added that anything going to site coordinators also needs to go to Ray Joseph.
