KELLOGG GRANT CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES OCTOBER 27, 1992 Present were: William Carlton (Project Director), Chuck Connor (Roane County Family Health Care, Inc.), David Elliott (WVU School of Pharmacy), Bob Foster (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Jan Fox (Academic Computing, MUSOM), Jean Gross (WVU School of Dentistry), Hilda Heady (RHI), Jody Jackson (Assistant to Hilda Heady), Linda Savory (Chair, KGCC, MUSOM), Diana Parnicza Stotts (MU School of Nursing), and Jamie Shumway (WVU School of Medicine). Absent were: Arnold Hassen (WV School of Osteopathic Medicine), Judith Kandzari (WVU School of Nursing), Richard Meckstroth (WVU School of Dentistry), Marian Swinker (WVU School of Medicine), Dr. Traubert (WVU School of Medicine), and Lynne Welch (MU School of Nursing). The meeting was called to order at 10:50 am. The meeting place was held in Flatwoods, West Virginia. COMMITTEE REPORTS MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDENT ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE: Dr. Elliott handed out revised evaluation forms which are enclosed (evaluation of multidisciplinary teaching session form and evaluation of student performance form). The routing of the evaluation form would consist of the following: - Forms would be sent to the site coordinator. - Upon completion, the forms would be sent to the Evaluation Committee chaired by Cecil Pollard. - The above committee would analyze and assemble data and send them back to the Student Assessment Committee, and the Curriculum Committee. It was discussed that the field professors would have two areas of responsibility: - A discipline specific evaluation function, and - Evaluating the multidisciplinary sessions. LEARNING RESOURCES COMMITTEE: Jan Fox announced that she, Linda Jacknowitz, and Arnie Hassen (LRC Group) would also be covering the RHI learning resource centers. There has been some concern about interlibrary loans. A formal KGCC Minutes Page Two form and procedure dealing with interlibrary loans is being established and will be included in the library section of the LRC Manual when obtained. By January they hope to have a new disk drive up on the rural network for the RHI project and Kellogg. With this news group program, issues can be discussed at each site, and other people can read these discussions, and anyone can post information to this news group program. RESEARCH SUBCOMMITTEE: Bill Carlton reported that a meeting will be held November 4 at 1:00 pm in Don Weston's Conference Room in Charleston. Anyone whose names have been given by the deans with an interest in research should attend this meeting. At this meeting a discussion will be held as to what is the role of this subcommittee committee. From this will be drawn concrete roles for this committee. Bill Carlton stated that he was not sure what John Pearson's role would be on this committee, but he has discussed with Dr. Pearson the possibility of his being involved with the research process. RURAL HEALTH INITIATIVE REPORT: Hilda Heady reported that Dr. Weston has stated that all students and all health sciences programs supported by the state will have to complete a portion of their training in a rural setting. She added that this might not be needed in certain disciplines - each institution will be responsible for implementing that directive. The board has been asked to specify a length of time to be in the field. Dr. Weston at this point has not stated whether they will or whether they will not. He would rather see this develop as a natural course in terms of what is a length of time required to properly train a rural practitioner. SITE COORDINATOR UPDATE: Chuck Connor reported that basic computer skills need to be taught to the students. Field professors have been notified of site training available. No research training has been scheduled at this time. He stated that the field professors want these workshops to occur over the weekends so that they could be family oriented. It was stated that funds cannot be used for family travel. Overall, Chuck feels that they are doing well at the Spencer site. SCHOOL OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE REQUEST FOR FUNDS: Bob Foster stated that Dr. Stookey did approve the request of funds and that their curriculum committee is still working on this report. This item will be added to the agenda for the November 17 meeting. PRE-SITE KELLOGG Bill Carlton stated that the main reason West Virginia received the Kellogg Grant was the fact that there was agreement to change the curriculum. In order to honor this agreement, we need to have students enrolled in all the five courses by the end of KGCC Minutes Page Three Year 2. A form was distributed that will need to be completed for each discipline and for each school. A total of seven forms will be submitted to the Michigan office. These forms should be completed and returned to Ray Joseph by November 6. The third page should be omitted when completing. Bill also suggested that Dr. Savory attend the Kellogg Initiative meeting in El Paso, Texas in March to represent the KGCC and the committee approved. This meeting will be discussing the issue of curriculum. MISCELLANEOUS Hilda Heady announced that interdisciplinary funding has become available to supplant existing interdiscipinary programs from the Bureau of Health Professions. A conference was held about four weeks ago. The grant source makes a very strong distinction between multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. The challenge is to come up with a way of proposing how to integrate medical technologist students, social work students and physical therapy students with the Kellogg and/or RHI students. The Bureau of Health Professions is aware of the RHI and Kellogg programs. We need to identify at least 2-3 sites where these disciplines can be included. Hilda added that the sites are able and willing to modify their curriculum to accommodate this grant. The question has risen about how much the curriculum can be modified. Hilda added that the additional students would not be in the field for longer than three months. The grant money cannot be used to provide physician training. There is a requirement that only 10% of this money can be used for the discipline of medicine. Hilda would like thoughts on the following: 1) sites, and 2) what is it going to take to integrate this program into the Kellogg project? She stated that the next scheduled meeting would be held on November 12 in Charleston at 10:00 am. If more information is needed, you should contact her office. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT At the last Joint Governing Committee, the community members asked for increased representation on this committee. Suggestions have been discussed. One possible solution suggested was that the JGC meetings and the KGCC meetings be held on the same day. Dr. Savory is to send to the JGC members a memorandum asking for their suggestions regarding the sessions. KGCC Minutes Page Four NEXT SCHEDULED MEETINGS The next scheduled KGCC meeting will be held on November 17 in Flatwoods, West Virginia, starting at 10:30 am. The December meeting was scheduled to be held on the 15th. Ron Richards will be here from December 10-11. It was decided that the KGCC will meeting on December 11 starting at 10:30 am until 12:00 noon and will be held in Charleston in the Don Weston's Conference Room (1018 Kanawha Boulevard, Boulevard Towers). The December 15 meeting has been cancelled. The January meeting has been scheduled for the 5th in Flatwoods from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm. The meeting was adjourned at 1:20 pm. Linda M.
