COMMITTEE REPORTS MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDENT ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE (Assessment of Student Performance in Clinical Rotations/Courses) David Elliott presented to the committee an update which included a handout that has been enclosed. He reported that this committee met on September 3 and 28. The committee recommends that reports be compiled at the end of each semester beginning with Fall 1992. Committee members will be responsible for gathering data already being collected by each health professions program. No attempt will be made to compare student performance between different programs of the same profession. The Multidisciplinary Student Assessment Committee is proposing that the KGCC approve that they report each semester. This was approved by the KGCC. (Evaluation of Preceptors and Sites by Students) This committee will gather data by each program using existing procedures. This data will be summarized each semester. Dr. Weston added that it is important that this information be anonymously returned to the preceptors as well as to the appropriate departments on campus. He added that it is useful to have this in writing. It was added that the site coordinators are the extensions of the schools in the field and their roles need to be clarified. Chuck Connor stated that the multidisciplinary KGCC Minutes Page Two sessions are being attended at Spencer; however, Diane Hughes stated that there is a problem with attendance at MDS at Camden on Gauley. (Student Logs of Patient Encounters) Existing systems in place at WVU School of Medicine, the School of Osteopathic Medicine and Marshall University School of Medicine have been received by the committee. MUSOM has selected Clinical Reference System according to Jan Fox. This system has good import and export functions and on-line reporting. David Elliott stated that Pharmacy students can use this program. Dentistry is working with Arnie Hassen on student needs and will report to Jan Fox. (Multidisciplinary Session Student Attendance and Assessments) A draft form is approved and enclosed. Initially the committee is planning to evaluate attendance as well as the quality of student participation. Later student evaluation will be expanded. Once implemented, student assessments will be summarized at the end of each semester. All site coordinators should send to Dr. Savory a summary of the cases being discussed and she will send to all sites to be circulated. Dr. Weston added that a core set of cases (comparable experience issue by site) will need to be discussed so that they are consistent. This core will be developed by the various institutions this year. Dr. Savory will coordinate this. (Report Card) It was the committee's understanding that Jan Fox at MUSOM is working to develop a data base system that would incorporate the needs for report card. David Elliott wants his committee to be released from this obligation. Dr. Weston stated that all the deans were asked to come forward and prepare a report card format to legislature. David's committee is to ask all deans to send information to Jan Fox. David's committee will be responsible for making copies for each of the seven schools of the data collected. CASE WRITING WORKSHOP It was felt that the workshop overall proved to be very successful. Dr. Savory will be collecting a library of cases. Dr. Weston stated that a central mechanism for those cases needs to be developed. Dr. Savory will prepare a mechanism. The sites need to identify and label all cases so that time will be reduced in pulling out this information. LRC REPORT Arnie Hassen reported that textbooks are being ordered. Dentistry has requested a computer. Jill Cochran reported that she needs library cards for all students and Dr. Hassen will KGCC Minutes Page Three report to the site coordinators about this issue. RESEARCH SUB-COMMITTEE Cecil Pollard was not available for an update. Dr. Weston stated that he and Bill Carlton are to oversee who should be on this committee. Dr. Weston added that three thrusts should be covered: - Epidemiology/community oriented research - Health services type research - Outcome type research Dr. Weston added that he should have this matter resolved by November. Dr. John Pearson was present at this meeting from WVUSOM. He was asked by Bill Carlton to oversee the development of research. Dr. Pearson agreed. Lynne Welch stated that nursing would like to be involved with this process. Bill Carlton will ask Cecil Pollard to act as a catalyst in bringing all these people together. Names of those who the the committee members want to serve on this project will be given to Ray Joseph and Cecil Pollard . Jill Cochran suggested that this committee start at the bottom level of research and that the sites should be more involved. She felt that the health research should be the responsibility of the sites. The next topic for a workshop should be research. Dr. Savory asked the site coordinators to meet with their field professors and determine what are the needs at each site. SITE COORDINATOR UPDATE April Vestal stated that everything is going well at the Rainelle Medical Center. Chuck Connor also stated that everything is going well at Spencer. POLICY & PROCEDURE MANUAL Dr. Savory distributed the last version of the PPM. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Jill Cochran stated that a medical health fair was organized at Rainelle and community members were invited to meet with the Kellogg staff in the planning of the fair. The committee recommended that sites develop a local site community subcommittee consisting of 3-6 members and the following topics would be covered: KGCC Minutes Page Four - community partnership health fair - community surveys - networking with schools - news/newsletter (public service announcement for those who cannot read/radio/cable call-in - networking - mentors (on week nights because students are leaving on weeks) - health and wellness education (peer counseling, i.e., drugs, STD, suicide) - community presence - health policy research MISCELLANEOUS Bill Carlton reported that he will send Dr. Savory a monthly report of the faculty development budget. He added that the field professors would have dinner with Ron Richards on December 10, and on December 11 Dr. Weston would meet with Ron Richards and also the KGCC in the evening. A draft of this visit will be distributed at the next Joint Governing Committee then a final form will come to the KGCC members.
