KGCC Minutes - Page Two Ray Joseph has the evaluation conducted by Helen Baker. Ray Joseph will distribute Helen Baker's information at a later date. Evaluations are indicative of some concern. Not everyone understands the expectations of curriculum in the program. Arnie Hassen gave to Dr. Savory the multidisciplinary evaluation instrument proposed by Helen Baker. David Elliott felt the workshop went well. He felt the workshop was a good way to meet the field professors from all the disciplines. Lynne Welch felt that for the first few months for each of the disciplines it would be a good idea to circuit ride to the field professors to help solve any on site problems. Dr. Savory asked the committee to give the number of students at the sites. Camden-On-Gauley: 2 pharmacy students 1 dentistry student 3 nursing students Total: 6 students Spencer: 1 medical student 6 nursing students (3 masters, 3 undergraduate) 1 dentistry student 2 pharmacy students Total: 10 students Rainelle: 1 dentistry student 3 nursing students (2 undergraduate, 1 masters) 2 pharmacy students (as of 9/21) 2 osteopathic students 3 nursing students (masters) Total: 11 students Bill Carlton added that at Rainelle there would be one physical therapy student per week during a semester. KGCC Minutes - Page Three *** THE MEMBERS OF THIS COMMITTEE ARE TO SEND TO DIANE MUNCY A LIST OF ALL STUDENTS. ALSO INCLUDED WITH THIS MATERIAL SHOULD BE A CALENDAR FOR ALL DISCIPLINES SHOWING WHEN STUDENTS BEGIN AND END THEIR SEMESTERS. CASE WRITING WORKSHOP The case writing workshop is still to be held on September 23 and 24 at the Hawk's Nest State Park. Dr. Paul Mann will be the facilitator at this workshop as planned. All field professors are encouraged to attend, as well as one person from each discipline. Dr. Weston inquired about whether we would use our own cases for the workshop. Dr. Savory stated that established cases would be used where appropriate. However, there still ought to be some expertise for being able to write an acceptable case. MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDENT ASSESSMENT SUB-COMMITTEE David Elliott stated that this committee met briefly on Monday, August 24. Members of this committee are David Elliott (Chair), Jean Gross, Judy Kandzari, and Marian Swinker. Dr. Elliott handed out material from this first meeting. They identified their charges as 1) student log of patient encounters, 2) multidisciplinary grade, and 3) input to evaluation sub-committee. Arnie Hassen stated that the students at the Rainelle Medical Center will be using the Lotus spreadsheet for log purposes. Diane Muncy is to contact the dean at all three institutions to confirm the contact person at their institution who will deal with Kellogg, Rural Health, and Report Card information. All questions regarding Kellogg should flow through them. They are: Robert Walker (MUSOM) Hilda Heady (WVU) John Mooney (WVSOM) Dr. Savory identified three areas that this sub-committee will be working with: 1) Report Card 2) Student assessment 3) Interface with Cecil Pollard on programmatic evaluation David mentioned that the multidisciplinary grade section has not been finalized. Before this can be done there first needs to be identified a small set of measurable objectives. Dr. Savory added that these objectives will include problem solving ability, analytic ability, and discipline-specific fund of knowledge would be evaluated as a point of departure. Information obtained by this sub-committee group needs to be fed to Cecil Pollard and the Evaluation Sub-Committee. The interface between these two groups is being defined in the KGCC Minutes - Page Four Evaluation Sub-Committee. LEARNING RESOURCES CENTER Arnie Hassen distributed to the members a handout prepared by Jan Fox at the workshop. Arnie reported that all three sites need to be hooked up with the US Health Link to take advantage of some of the services being provided. Also, all three sites need to be hooked up to Jan Fox's data base - telephone lines are being set up. VCR equipment has been identified and is now in the process of approval. Dr. Hassen stated that they are trying to get the book list reduced for the libraries at all three sites. Dr. Weston added that $1,000 will be available to spend on books per site. RESEARCH SUB-COMMITTEE Dr. Savory requested that this committee set up for the next meeting a scheme of flow of any information that is being identified and so that the KGCC can be made aware of all the information that is being collected. Dr. Weston added that he felt there were three dimensions to research: 1) Community-oriented primary care research (multidisciplinary in nature) 2) Health care systems research 3) Outcome research Dr. Weston proposed that a research committee be developed for all the rural projects at each site. Dr. Weston added that the workload should be divided. RURAL HEALTH INITIATIVE Dr. Traubert was not present at this meeting, so Dr. Weston presented to the committee an update on the Rural Health Initiative project. Dr. Weston stated that all eight consortiums have been identified. They represent over 120 institutions, health centers, rural hospitals, etc. Dr. Weston also stated that the operating budget has been finalized. The only part of the state not covered by a rural program is the northern panhandle. New sites will be a topic for discussion at the next Joint Governing Committee meeting on September 14. PHYSICAL THERAPY Bill Hanlon was not present at this meeting, so Dr. Savory has asked that he write to us an update on physical therapy. KGCC Minutes - Page Five SITE COORDINATOR The site coordinators will be asked to send to Dr. Savory an update on all site activities. PRE-SITE KELLOGG Arnie Hassen reported that there is a committee on his campus that is reviewing the five courses and they will report to the KGCC. Their target date is August, 1993. Judith Kandzari reported that nursing at WVU is looking at commonalities between the disciplines. They now have a new dean of nursing and feel that this is the time to implement new ideas for curriculum. Bill Carlton will ask the Joint Governing Committee members to determine the perceived needs of the communities. Dr. Savory added that she and Lynne Welch have met with representatives from psychology at MU and plan to meet with representatives from social work and public health regarding their cooperation at Marshall in multidisciplinary sessions. HANDBOOK FINALIZATION Dr. Savory distributed a draft of the Kellogg Handbook. Lynne Welch distributed a handbook that she prepared for the MU nursing students. She also added that she felt it not necessary to include nursing information in the Kellogg Handbook. It was suggested that site-specific information can be located at the sites. General handbook will be available for all students. In the handbook it was suggested that the following be included: names and numbers field professors and a list of Kellogg board members. It was suggested that the job descriptions be omitted. Also, it was suggested that the discipline-specific material be deleted, add emergency numbers, and add site descriptors (short paragraph about what Kellogg is all about). Bill Carlton added that the role of mentor should be stated as "community residents" and a job description should be included in the handbook. Dr. Savory has asked that all changes be received in her office by August 28. The dress code should be deleted from the handbook, but elaborated in the site specific instructions. POLICY MANUAL REVISION The policy manual prepared by Dr. Savory will be divided among the members according to KGCC Minutes - Page Six the following for revision: - Student recruitment: Judy Kandzari (schools will adopt a recommendation to recruit students). - Student housing: Bob Foster - Curriculum (pre-site and site/5 courses): curriculum assessment (David Elliott) curriculum change (Dr. Savory) curriculum goals and objectives (Drs. Savory and Welch) courses (discipline-specific) (Drs. Savory and Welch) - Student assessment - grading (David Elliott) - LRC (Arnie Hassen) - Faculty CEU (Bob Foster) - Workshops (Drs. Savory and Swinker) - Courses: multidisciplinary and discipline-specific (Dr. Savory, Bob Foster, Jean Gross) - Student orientation (Drs. Savory and Meckstroth, Site Coordinators) - Team building (Bill Carlton's material) - Calendar (all institutions will send to Dr. Savory's office their academic calendar). Dr. Savory's office will see that Ray Joseph has a copy of the disk containing the manual by the September 3 or 4 so that he may take the final form of the manual to the next Joint Governing Committee meeting (September 14). MULTIDISCIPLINARY SESSIONS The question was asked who would be the team leader among the field professors. Each site should identify this team leader. The leader could/should rotate among field professors. Dr. Savory will write the field professors and ask them to provide feedback regarding the successes and problems arising in multidisciplinary sessions. The KGCC members are going to bring back to the next meeting their understanding of the objectives. KGCC Minutes - Page Seven CHANGE OF MEETING The next scheduled meeting, September 29, has been canceled. The meeting has been rescheduled for October 6, 10:30 am - 2:30 pm, Flatwoods, West Virginia.
