West Virginia Rural Health Education Partnerships State Advisory Panel Meeting Minutes November 17, 1997 2:30 to 4:30 PM Days Inn, Flatwoods Dennis McCutcheon opened the meeting with the introductions of new members and guests. It was moved and seconded to accept the consent calendar as mailed. Committee review and reports: Evaluation Cecil Pollard presented comparison date on rotations from 1995-1996 academic year and from the 1996-1997 academic year for the panel’ review. Faculty Development Day Report Amy Reasinger reported that the 1997 Faculty Development had 115 attendees with all disciplines represented. After reviewing the agenda for the event, Amy stated that overall evaluations were positive and highlighted the topics of discussion for the October Faculty Development Committee Meeting. Specifically, the committee is currently working on a survey of all field faculty and an assessment of technology needs/interest. School Committee Hilda Heady reported on the School Committee from this morning. The group discussed a number of issues related to the distribution of students and came up with the parameters of the issues and some questions. 1. What is the ideal distribution statewide to meet our mission? 2. Do we need to invest more in needy sites and how if so, we will remain fair? She stated that the most significant outcome of today’s meeting was the recognition that students should be active partners as well and the desire of the whole group to develop a way for students to be involved. Judy Sedgeman, Chair, psychology of Mind foundation, served as the facilitator for the group meeting and she observed that there were three values that emerged for the meeting: · A desire for deeper communication especially in terms of what has inspired us all community members, students and schools and ways to communicate this inspiration · A commitment to high quality valuable learning experience · Decision making happens at the level of contact from the grassroots up Health Sciences Scholarship Program Alicia Tyler gave the update on Health Science Scholarship Program. She also reported that there are a total of 30 students to receive scholarships: 20 Medical Students 11 Marshall University 6 WVU School of Medicine 3 WVU 3 Nurse Practitioners 2 Marshall University 1 - WVU 7 Physicial Assistants 5 - College of WV 2 Alderson Broaddus College Annual Awards Nominations Amy Reasinger reported that the Outstanding Contribution Awards nomination forms to all panel members were being accepted. She distributed copies of the Outstanding Contribution Awards Nomination Forms to all panel members. She described the awards process and the four categories for awards Outstanding Community Partner, Outstanding Field Faculty partner, Outstanding Student Community Service Project and Outstanding Student Research Project. The deadline for submitting nominations is January 12, 1998. The awards will be presented at the February 23, 1998 RHEP Annual Recognition Dinner in Charleston. Executive Director’s Report Hilda heady distributed a policy development chart to be used as quick review of the policies under development and to track their review course through the various committees. The committee Chairs will be meeting quarterly to review the committees assigned to do specific policy work and to work out simultaneous referrals of policies to the committees. The policies currently under review and projected to be ready for vote in March are those concerning the distribution of students, the definition of primary care, designation of on-site director of Clinical Education and consortia level faculty development. Site Coordinator Progress Reports Reports from Southern Counties Consortium by Penny Rose and Carla Campbell and from Country Roads Consortium by Elizabeth Richmond were presented to the panel.
