WVRHEP Levels Policy

Rotations between 7/1/2005 and 6/30/2009

Beginning in July, 2005, medical students may receive two months of RHEP credit for one month spent at a Level III site, if the students' respective medical school so allows. The purpose of this policy is to encourage rotations in the most underserved areas which have had a history of few RHEP rotations and are also Health Professions Shortage Areas (HPSAs). Level I sites are sites located in counties which historically have had the bulk of medical student rotations. Level II sites are in counties that have had fewer medical student rotations plus specific underserved towns/sites located within Level I counties. Level III sites are sites located in counties which have had the fewest medical student rotations and have a HPSA designation and experience chronic problems with recruitment and retention of health providers.

Rotations beginning on or after 7/1/2009

Changes to the RHEP levels policy will take effect in July of 2009. Under the updated policy, medical students may receive two months of RHEP credit for one month spent at a designated shortage site, if the student's medical school so allows.

The purpose of this policy is to encourage rotations in West Virginia Health Professions Shortage Areas (HPSA) and HPSA-designated sites as well as free clinics located in rural areas.

A shortage site is defined as one that meets one of the following criteria:

  1. be designated as a HPSA on the HRSA website (or be a satellite clinic of a HPSA site that is listed on the HRSA website) in December 2008
  2. be in a geographical area designated as a HPSA on the HRSA website in December 2008
  3. be a free clinic in a rural area

* Rotations with preceptors who work 50% time or more at a site that is not designated a shortage area may not qualify for this policy. Contact the Coordinator for the applicable RHEP Consortium for further information.
